Chapter 17

The sun climbed over the horizon and shone through the window on Cody’s face. He tried to turn away from the sunlight but couldn’t escape the heat. After about ten minutes, he abandoned the idea of sleeping in and sat up in the hammock. As he looked about the little house, Hazel was stretched out in the hammock beside him, and on the far side of her slept C. J.

Maybe it was culture shock he felt at that moment. He had left a nice lifestyle in Amsterdam, and suddenly his new surroundings seemed too much, too foreign. What he was doing in this sandy village surrounded by a crocodile swamp? How could he ever return to law-enforcement?

Right on cue, Slinker, that wild, lizard-hunting cat, reached under the door and meowed. That made him smile.

Very carefully, Cody climbed out of the hammock, trying not to make any noise that might wake Hazel and C. J. The painted concrete floor was warm beneath his feet as he walked to the bathroom and closed the door. Standing at the toilet, he looked down into the tank that was missing half its lid. A small black frog sat on the flush valve. Cody whispered hello to the frog that C.J. had named Ralph, and watched as it jumped into the air and disappeared beneath the water. And that was the start of his day. Ralph had jumped, and Slinker was at the door looking for food.

He retrieved a can of Vienna sausages that he had picked up at the local market.

He was sure that the crew of lizards that scampered about the walls must’ve screamed when he opened the door and allowed the feline killer into the house, but he had a surprise for everyone.

When Cody popped the top off the can and the scent of meat spread through the air, Slinker jumped and let out a strange meow, half plea and half demand.

Cody pulled the sausages from the tin and set them on a piece of clean paper. Then he backed away. That little lady cat ran up and sniffed and grabbed and gulped one down, ran a couple of yards and dashed back for more, low to the ground as if she might have to fight for the prize.

“Good morning,” said Hazel, sitting up.

“Morning. So, how was your first night in the kitchen?”

“Oh, boy,” said Hazel, brushing strands of hair from her face. “That was fun. Boy did I shake up some of those tired old recipes. Why, I made one customer a top sirloin burger that was so good I thought he was going to dance around the room.”

Cody laughed. “Good. And Clarissa was happy too?”

“Pleased as punch. She’s gunna help me film a video later this evening. In exchange for her help, I’m going to mention her restaurant during the video.”

Later, Cody, Hazel, and C. J. walked side by side to the kitchen building. While the other two were eating, Cody made arrangements for C. J. to begin working with his tutor.
